Light Bulb Moment

I was on “vacation” for the past ten days. I use the quote marks because when you have two little boys as energetic and rambunctious as the Tasmanian Devil having them 24/7 does not a vacation make. I had no time to myself. Being unable to sit and write whenever the urge hits forces me to let the voices in my head reach a crescendo. Sometimes it’ll drive me slightly batty (well, more so than I already amJ), but mostly it allows me to have these incredible light-bulb moments, where all of a sudden I know EXACTLY what these people in my head want!

I will admit, however, the fresh, clean air and clear, blue skies did all of us a world of good, especially Wonder boy and Cutie Pie. Not to mention, being able to go for evening walks is a treat for us because where we live is polluted, traffic-jammed and with limited footpaths.

Most evenings on these walks we’d just talk about the boys, us and our day, but sometimes my writing would creep in. The truth is I’m a pantser when it comes to writing…. Basically, I start with a vague idea of what the story is about and then let the voices in my head take over (on paper, I’m not completely crazy) and I write. So far, that method has served me well. I write the whole story and then when I edit I make notes of things that need researching, fleshing out etc… Anyhoo, this time, as a result of pantsing and not writing daily, I found myself at a bit of an impasse. The story wasn’t flowing the way it usually does. What to do? I didn’t want to kill anyone off just yet.

So I talked, using Hubby as a sounding board, letting all the voices crowding me get an outlet and giving me a chance to process. Just one walk allowed me to flesh out book two and figure out how I wanted to end the whole series. All that through an evening walk and a chat with my own real-life romance hero. Small towns ain’t so bad after all.

What about you? Any light bulb moments?
