As promised here’s a blog by Donna Marie Hanson. She’s doing a blog tour and offering a give away of a hard copy of Shatterwing, her dark fantasy novel. Read her article on writing below, and then read on for a bio and a blurb about her new book and how to win a free hard copy. YAY!!!
It’s not all about the writing
One of the things about being a writer these days is the emphasis on promotion, about getting your name out there, getting people to read your books. So much of the publishing industry these days is not in books and mortar bookstores and it’s not about popping out to your local book store to sign books or even doing a book tour. Even if you did have a print copy, that’s a lot of work and money spent with very little in the way of return. Unless of course you already have an audience then your fans would love to see you and have books signed. Or even more in fairytale land your publisher fund your convention visit or book store.
Also, there is no real definitive answer about what works, what puts you in touch with your audience. You can annoy a lot of people (so don’t be a dick). Or they can be happy to support you and spread the word. And often what worked that one time won’t be repeated so it’s flogging a dead horse. More importantly some writers don’t do anything and their book sells. So annoying!
This blog tour I’m on is me trying to have some control over things and getting the word out there. I’m lucky to be supported by a wonderful set of writers and fans who like to help other writers get a leg up. I’m so grateful for that. If anything this digital age has increased the way people communicate and also help one another. Some people on this blog tour I’ve been on have never met me, or have books that could be seen as competition for mine, but we are all helping each other out in this uncertain age. Paying it forward is an excellent strategy. Thanks you all.
I find I have a lot more distractions in my working day than I did when I first started writing about 15 years ago. I have a real twitter addiction and Facebook is a close second, then I love reading lots of news and researching things I don’t know about. This is all before I even get to think about writing. Then I have some blogs and believe it or not an hour writing a blog post is an hour not writing a novel. It’s crazy. I sort of love the craziness of it but I know it’s counter-productive too. I only have so much computer time with RSI issues and you know we weren’t really built to be at a computer all day-it’s bad for our bodies. A standing desk might help that…but…
So what I’m saying is that there’s more to this writing gig than writing stories, (I should add that reading is an important ingredient) it’s having space to think, to create and then there’s all the guff about participating in this digital world of ours and also doing what you have to do to get your books read. That’s an ever changing story so keep your eyes open.

Dragon wine could save them. Or bring about their destruction.
Since the moon shattered, the once peaceful and plentiful world has become a desolate wasteland. Factions fight for ownership of the remaining resources as pieces of the broken moon rain down, bringing chaos, destruction and death.
The most precious of these resources is dragon wine – a life-giving drink made from the essence of dragons. But the making of the wine is perilous and so is undertaken by prisoners. Perhaps even more dangerous than the wine production is the Inspector, the sadistic ruler of the prison vineyard who plans to use the precious drink to rule the world.
There are only two people that stand in his way. Brill, a young royal rebel who seeks to bring about revolution, and Salinda, the prison’s best vintner and possessor of a powerful and ancient gift that she is only beginning to understand. To stop the Inspector, Salinda must learn to harness her power so that she and Brill can escape, and stop the dragon wine from falling into the wrong hands.
